    The Peer Coach model

Human support, grounded in lived experience

Trained Peer Coaches are the human center of Chaperone. They meet people with empathy, real-world understanding, and practical guidance, under structured supervision, with safety built into every conversation.

    What Peer Coaches do

Someone in your corner, from the first conversation

A Peer Coach is a trained person who has walked a similar road. They listen first, then help people make sense of what they’re facing and take a manageable next step, without judgment, and without rushing.

    Listen and understand

Peer Coaches start by hearing the whole story: what’s hard, what’s working, and what someone actually wants. People feel met, not processed.

    Build practical momentum

Together they break things down into small, doable steps, setting goals, finding routines, and following up so progress feels possible.

    Connect to the right support

When someone needs more than peer support, coaches help them find and reach the right resource: clinicians, programs, or crisis services.

Peer support is non-clinical. Peer Coaches do not provide therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and they are not a substitute for clinical care or crisis services.

How peer support differs from therapy

Different roles, working alongside each other

Peer support and clinical care are complementary, not interchangeable. Knowing the difference helps people get the right kind of help at the right time.

    Peer support

    Trained Peer Coaches

    • Grounded in lived experience and shared understanding
    • Focuses on connection, encouragement, and practical next steps
    • Lower-barrier and often earlier: before, between, and beyond care
    • Helps people navigate toward clinical care when it’s needed
    • Operates within defined boundaries and structured supervision
    Clinical care

    Licensed clinicians & therapists

    • Delivered by licensed professionals under clinical scope
    • Provides diagnosis, treatment, and therapy
    • Follows clinical protocols and care plans
    • Often the right destination a Peer Coach helps someone reach
    • Handles crisis and acute clinical needs peer support does not
Peer support is not therapy, clinical treatment, diagnosis, crisis counseling, or emergency care. Peer Coaches provide non-clinical support, practical navigation, encouragement, and connection. When someone needs a higher level of care, Chaperone helps route them to appropriate resources.
    Human connection & lived experience

“You don’t have to explain everything to be understood”

The thing that makes peer support work isn’t a feature. It’s a person who genuinely gets it. Lived experience builds trust quickly, lowers the fear of reaching out, and helps people feel less alone with what they’re carrying.

That trust is often what turns a tentative first message into an ongoing relationship, and an ongoing relationship into real, durable progress.

See how connection leads to next steps

“My coach had been where I was. For the first time, I wasn’t getting advice from a stranger. I was getting it from someone who’d actually made it through.”

    Training

Prepared to support people well and safely

Peer Coaches are selected, screened, and trained before they ever support a person. Training builds skill and confidence in the things that matter most.

    Core peer-support skills

Active listening, empathy, goal-setting, motivational techniques, and how to hold space without judgment.

    Boundaries & safety

Recognizing what’s outside the peer role, spotting risk signals, and following clear escalation steps.

    Privacy & conduct

Confidentiality practices, professional conduct, and respecting the trust people place in their coach.

    Sensitivity & inclusion

Supporting people from different backgrounds and experiences with cultural humility and respect.

    Navigation know-how

Understanding the support ecosystem so coaches can guide people toward the right next resource.

    Ongoing development

Continued learning, feedback, and refreshers so skills stay sharp and current over time.

    • Coaches work under structured supervision, not on their own
    • Regular case review and guidance from experienced supervisors
    • Quality assurance review of support interactions
    • Clear escalation paths when a situation needs more than peer support
    • AI-assisted safety-signal surfacing to support human judgment
    Supervision & quality assurance

    No coach supports people alone

Behind every Peer Coach is a layer of human oversight. Supervisors guide coaches, review quality, and step in when a situation calls for escalation, so support stays safe, consistent, and accountable.

Intelligent guidance helps by surfacing summaries and possible safety signals, but the decisions always stay with trained people.

    Review safety & governance
    Boundaries & relationship continuity

Clear about what peer support is and what it isn’t

Strong boundaries keep peer support safe and effective. Continuity keeps it human. Both are designed into how Peer Coaches work.

    What peer support offers

Empathy, encouragement, accountability, practical guidance, and help finding the right next step, consistently and without judgment.

    Where the line is

Peer Coaches don’t diagnose, prescribe, provide therapy, or act as crisis counselors. When those needs arise, coaches connect people to clinical or emergency support.

    Continuity that lasts

Where possible, people stay with the same coach over time, so trust compounds and support feels like a real relationship, not a series of tickets.

Part of a broader support ecosystem

Peer Coaches connect, they don’t replace

Peer support is one layer in a larger network of care. Coaches help people move between layers, and Chaperone’s navigation and guidance make those handoffs smoother and warmer.
